I’m reading this textbook for my graduate course and had high expectations of receiving practical ideas to use in the classroom. The author is obviously anti-NCLB which appeals to me. However, while he states philosophical ideas and concepts that can make a school stronger, he does not include actual applications. In other words, this all sounds great on paper, but for “real-life” instruction, I find the ideas impractical. We may not like NCLB, but we also cannot ignore it. This book promotes putting aside instruction geared to NCLB testing and pushes for time-consuming planning and implementation of instruction I am not convinced will actually help students learn what they need to learn for a testing practice that will not be going away anytime soon.
